BRONSKI BEAT – war eine britische Synthie-Pop-Gruppe der 1980er Jahre. Sie bestand aus Steve Bronski und Larry Steinbachek, die für Keyboard und Perkussion zuständig waren, und dem Sänger Jimmy Somerville. Die Gruppe wurde 1983 gegründet. Im folgenden Jahr erschien ihre Debütsingle Smalltown Boy, die von einem Jungen handelt, der von seinen Mitmenschen aufgrund seiner Homosexualität verachtet wird. Die folgende Single Why handelte von dem gleichen Thema, jedoch war das Lied sowohl textlich als musikalisch dunkler und härter. Ende 1984 veröffentlichte die Gruppe das Album The Age of Consent. Auf der Innenhülle der LP war das Schutzalter für homosexuelle Handlungen in den verschiedenen Länder der Welt dargestellt. In der dritten Single It Ain’t Necessarily So werden drei Geschichten des Alten Testaments interpretiert (David gegen Goliath aus 1. Buch Samuel, Buch Jona, Mose Geburt aus 2. Buch Mose), der Text stammt von Ira Gershwin und wurde schon 1935 in der Oper Porgy and Bess uraufgeführt. Die Klarinetten-Soli wurden von Richard Coles gespielt, mit dem Somerville später The Communards gründete. 1985 nahmen die drei zusammen mit Marc Almond eine Coverversion von Donna Summers Hit I Feel Love auf. In diesem Stück wurden auch die Songs Love to Love You Baby und Johnny Remember Me zu einem Medley verarbeitet. Kurz danach verließ Somerville die Band und gründete mit Richard Coles The Communards. Bei Bronski Beat stieg der Sänger John Foster ein, der deutlich unpolitischer war und nicht über eine solche prägnante Stimme wie Somerville verfügte. Die Single Hit That Perfect Beat war wieder ein großer Erfolg. Danach folgten ein weniger erfolgreiches Lied (C’mon C’mon) und das Album Truthdare Doubledare. Danach löste sich die Gruppe auf. 1995 scheiterte die Band mit einem Comebackversuch mit dem Album Rainbow Nation, das aus altem Material und neuen Songs bestand.
