THE COMMUNARDS – waren eine britische Popband, die 1985 gegründet wurde, bestehend aus Jimmy Somerville und Richard Coles. Nach seinem Ausstieg bei Bronski Beat tauften Jimmy Somerville und Richard Coles ihr Unternehmen im Mai 1985 zunächst ‚Committee‘, dann nach wenigen Monaten ‚Communards‘ und traten erst nur zu Gunsten von Homosexuellenhilfsgruppen auf. Nach der ersten, von der BBC boykottierten Single „You Are My World“, touren sie mit Billy Bragg oder ‚Style Council‘. Danach hatte Somerville mit den Communards Hits mit den Remakes der 1970er Jahre Disco-Titel Don’t Leave Me This Way (von Thelma Houston, Gastsängerin: Sarah Jane Morris) und Never Can Say Goodbye (von Gloria Gaynor). Beide konnten sich in ganz Europa in den Top Ten der Charts platzieren. Weitere Hits waren Tomorrow, So Cold The Night, There’s More to Love und You Are my World. Die Single For a Friend sowie das zweite Album Red (1987) widmeten Somerville und Coles Ihrem gemeinsamen Freund Mark Ashton, der 1987 an AIDS gestorben war. Während ihrer gemeinsamen Musikkarriere waren The Communards Vorreiter in puncto Aufklärung und Bekämpfung der Immunkrankheit AIDS. 1988 löste sich die Band nach einer heftigen Auseinandersetzung während der Europa-Tournee auf.  Richard Coles wurde Journalist für das Times Literary Supplement und das Catholic Herald. Heute lebt und arbeitet er für die „Church of England“ ist Priester und lebt in Finedon/UK.
