Bronski Beat waren Steve Bronski und Larry Steinbachek, die für Keyboard und Percussion zuständig waren, und natürlich Sänger Jimmy Somerville. Ihre 1983er Debütsingle Smalltown Boy mit seiner offenen Anspielung auf Homosexualität hat das MTV-Zeitalter mitgeprägt. Ende 1984 veröffentlichte die Band das Album The Age of Consent . In der dritten Single It Ain t Necessarily So werden drei Geschichten des Alten Testaments interpretiert, und die Klarinetten-Soli wurden von Richard Coles gespielt, mit dem Somerville später The Communards gründete. Diese hatten direkt Riesenhits mit den Remakes der 1970er Jahre Disco-Titel Don t Leave Me This Way und Never Can Say Goodbye . Beide konnten sich europaweit in den Top 10 platzieren. Weitere Hits waren Tomorrow , So Cold The Night , There’s More to Love und You Are My World . Die Single For A Friend sowie das zweite Album Red (1987) widmeten Somerville und Coles einem 1987 an AIDS gestorbenen Freund. Während ihrer gemeinsamen Musikkarriere waren The Communards Vorreiter in puncto Aufklärung und Bekämpfung der Immunkrankheit AIDS. Demon / Edsel hat nun das Beste aus den wegweisenden Alben von Bronski Beat, Communards und Jimmy Somerville Solo als schön aufgemachte 2CD+DVD-Edition mit einer Fülle an Remixen und B-Seiten zusammengestellt.
