Rolling Stones Cover “Gimme Shelter” – The Video with JS

This is a short documentary made in 1992 about a music project organised by Jon Fat Beast, a UK music promoter. The idea was to raise money for charity in order to help solve the homeless crisis in the UK. This was not helped by the recession of the early 1990s. The idea was that a variety of diverse artists would work together on separate productions of the Jagger/Richards classic Gimme Shelter. The results were interesting and surprisingly varied. What was planned was a simultaneous release of all these versions so that they would occupy the top slots in the UK singles charts and generate a lot of money. I don’t know what happened exactly. I taped this programme off-air in 1993 at 1am. I have to presume that aside from people who read the music press in those days, nobody knew about it. It was a worthy effort in an era before the internet when a famous face and a marketing tactic was essential to generate media interest. Sadly the homeless situation does not seem to have improved in the big cities. We need a different kind of society really.
